Browser games have always offered accessibility and speed. Today, they bring something even more powerful to the table: sustainability. This summer, GameDistribution by Azerion, Playgama.com, and the Playing for the Planet Alliance, facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), are launching the Green Web Game Jam 2025. Importantly, this marks the first HTML5 spin on the Green Game Jam.

A Game Jam With a Global Goal

From July 4 to 15, we invite developers worldwide to create impactful HTML5 games with one clear mission: to raise environmental awareness and drive real-world change through gameplay. Naturally, GameDistribution proudly supports and amplifies this movement.

Since 2020, the Green Game Jam has challenged leading game studios, from Supercell to Microsoft, to embed eco-conscious content into their live games. As a result, the jam had an impressive impact. For example, in 2024 alone:

  • 108M+ daily active users engaged with sustainable gaming content
  • 610K trees were planted
  • 1.5K ft² of land was protected
  • 30K real-world actions were taken by players
  • 45 game teams participated across platforms and genres

Now, the Green Web Game Jam reaches an even broader audience: web gamers. As Yuliya Nabieva, VP of Gaming at Azerion, notes, this is a rare opportunity to engage the growing ecosystem of web developers in meaningful, playable experiences that drive both innovation and positive change, a vision that GameDistribution deeply shares.

Moreover, with over 500 million users playing HTML5 games globally, the jam taps into a high-volume, low-barrier format that’s both scalable and sustainable.

“Browser games consume minimal energy and extend device lifespans, making them one of the most sustainable ways to play,” says Dmitry Kachmar, founder of Playgama.

The Structure of the Green Web Game Jam

Between July 4 and 15, developers can join the event on itch.io. Thanks to its fast-paced format and open access, this global game jam welcomes everyone, from indie creators to major studios.

Meanwhile, Louisa Keight, Project Lead at Playing for the Planet, highly anticipates this first web-based edition. Furthermore, she expects innovative ideas from the diverse and creative Playgama community.

The challenge is to create impactful HTML5 educational games. Specifically, these titles must raise awareness of pressing environmental issues. For instance, these critical topics include pollution, overconsumption, deforestation, and climate change.

However, this event isn’t just about creating compelling stories. Instead, the core objective is to devise smart gameplay mechanics. Ultimately, these mechanics must actively encourage responsible behaviors and real-world actions.

✨ The three winners will:

  • Be published across GameDistribution’s global network (2,000+ platforms)
  • Be featured on the Playgama homepage
  • Appear in a global showcase on September 1, 2025

And, best of all, GameDistribution and Playgama will donate 100% of their 2025 revenue share from the winners to On the Edge, a conservation nonprofit focused on biodiversity.

From Gameplay to Global Impact

The theme of the Green Game Jam 2025, “Nurture Yourself With Nature,” invites developers to craft experiences that spark empathy and inspire real-world environmental action. Over the years, the jam has shown how powerful storytelling and smart mechanics can turn gameplay into a measurable impact.

The Value for Browser Game Developers

GameDistribution’s mission is to power meaningful player engagement and drive value through curated content. Supporting the Green Web Game Jam aligns with our goal to amplify both reach and impact, all while helping partners tap into a cause-driven audience.

Specifically, this initiative offers developers global visibility through a premium publishing network. It also provides revenue opportunities aligned with a positive purpose. Finally, participants gain brand credibility by joining a movement that UNEP and industry leaders actively back.

Additionally, research shows that consumers are 4–6x more likely to support companies that stand for something bigger than just business (Forbes / Global Strength of Purpose Study)
